MSU NetIDs for Departments

MSU NetIDs are assigned to all current faculty, staff, students, and retirees. A NetID is a unique alphanumeric identifier auto-generated from the user’s name. It is a personal identifier used to login to many university computing and networking services.

MSU units may also purchase additional NetIDs for departmental, individual, or special project use.

Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) that are registered with Student Life for the current academic year are granted access to a NetID.

People or groups not affiliated with MSU are not eligible to receive a NetID.

There is no charge for MSU NetIDs provided automatically to students, faculty, staff, and retirees.

Departmental NetIDs incur a one-time $10 setup fee and a $1 monthly recurring charge billed to an MSU account number.

Billing information

Departmental NetIDs must be billed to an MSU account number and cannot be bill an individual.

When department-sponsored NetIDs are no longer used, departments should request that the NetID is disabled at which point the billing would also end.

Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) are exempt from billing.

This service is supported 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year with regularly scheduled maintenance periods.

Service requests are processed Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. by the MSU ID Office.

A 4-digit PIN/personal identification number (or PAN/personal access number for students) is required to activate a new NetID or reset a forgotten NetID password.

PIN requests are kept in queue for up to 30 days after receipt. Although a PIN letter for an incoming employee can be requested at any time, PINs cannot be printed, and the request fulfilled, until the NetID exists in the system. New employees come into the system in a feed from MSU HR at which point the NetID is auto-generated.
