SUMMARY:Brown Bag: Design for Learning
DESCRIPTION:Speaker\nBei Zhang\, College of Natural Science \nBLD\, biomedical laboratory diagnostics\, is a program that educates clinical lab scientists who will be dealing with the lab tests ordered by physicians in a clinical setting on a daily basis.  Math\, basic medical science and clinical medical science have been woven together in all our major courses.  Considering the diverse background our students have\, teaching novel medicine concepts and math at the same time has always been a challenge in big sized lecture classes as well as mid-sized lab classes with limited amount of time. \nIn this brown bag session\, Bei will discuss the development of a series of lessons designed to help students to master basic and clinical medical concepts as well as the math skills needed in the clinical lab in order to perform the requested tests.  The lessons are designed using a combination of tools including Camtasia\, Educreations and Softchalk.  From these lessons\, students learn how to validate and interpret the clinical tests\, such as a CBC\, by integrating their skills and knowledge from math\, basic medical science\, as well as clinical lab science.  The lessons are designed so that students can learn to interpret the test results step by step by following the instructor repetitively whenever and however they want while exploring the basic concepts in clinical medicine subjects.  Students’ active practice in solving practical clinical problems are recorded and graded instantly so that they can immediately learn from their own mistakes. \nThis session will be of special interest to individuals who are interested in seeing how various learning technology tools can be integrated to create a rich learning environment in which student performance is captured.  It will also be of interest for individuals who want to learn and get ideas as to how they can create similar environments for their classes in which multiple skills are developed. \nEveryone is invited to attend. \nBackground\nThe Explorations in Instructional Technology Brown Bag series is hosted by the MSU College of Education\, College of Natural Science\, and MSU IT Teaching and Learning Technology.
