SUMMARY:Brown Bag: Introducing SocialSim: Delivering Simulation to Promote Interprofessional Education
DESCRIPTION:Speaker\n\nMary Kay Smith\, MSU Learning & Assessment Center\n\nThere have been exponential changes in the U.S. healthcare system in recent years prompting need for institutions in higher education to better prepare students to function as members of an inter-professional team. Coinciding with this is exponential growth in the field of healthcare simulation and virtual methodologies.  Inter-professional education (IPE) is not new and despite efforts over three decades\, implementation has been slow. In an effort to overcome barriers\, a new simulation methodology has been developed and introduced to medical and nursing students. \nA qualitative inquiry was used to explore student perceptions regarding SocialSim as a method to facilitate IPE. Ten pairs of medical and nursing students engaged in a simulation over the course of three days using a social media platform as a mode of pedagogical delivery.  Following the simulation\, semi-structured interviews were conducted to elicit student perceptions of the influence of SocialSim on simulation-based IPE\, the affordances and challenges of SocialSim and the influence of SocialSim on communication and collaboration. \nMary Kay will discuss both the simulation that was developed and used in the IPE. She will also present the students’ perceptions of the use of the simulation via a social media platform. This session will be of interest to all who are involved in educational simulations\, and also to anyone who is interested in the benefits and limitations of social media in an educational setting. \nBackground\nThe Explorations in Instructional Technology Brown Bag series is hosted by the MSU College of Education\, College of Natural Science\, and MSU IT Teaching and Learning Technology.
