The MSU SSL Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides the MSU community with a way to connect securely to the MSU campus network. This SSL VPN connection works from any location, whether in East Lansing or anywhere around the world.
Regular faculty, full-time staff, retirees, trustees, and graduate students can log into the SSL VPN service using their MSU NetID at vpn.msu.edu.
For on-call employees and student employees, the SSL VPN is available for a nominal fee.
The SSL VPN service is available on a limited basis for undergraduate students living on campus. Students may request access in order to remotely access or administer their personal computer systems located within the campus residential hall or university apartments system.
This service is offered at no charge to regular faculty, full-time staff, retirees, trustees, and graduate students.
For on-call employees and students employees, the SSL VPN is available for a $10 setup fee plus $7 per month recurring fee billed to a departmental account. The supervisor or another administrator of an on-call employee or student employee should fill request access and include the NetID to be authorized and departmental account information.
This service is supported 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year with regularly scheduled maintenance periods.
No more than 30 minutes of unplanned downtime per month, or an uptime percentage of 99.93%.
While the VPN provides access to MSU’s campus network, it doesn’t ensure an encrypted path between you and the servers your department may host. If you work with sensitive data online, get help from your department system administrator to make sure communications are secure and encrypted.
