Six outstanding instructors for online and blended courses were selected as recipients of the 2016–2018 MSU AT&T Faculty-Staff Awards in Instructional Technology.

Jessica Knott, Learning Design Manager for The MSU Hub for Innovation and selection committee coordinator, explained, “The AT&T Awards provide a venue for MSU to recognize outstanding educators who, through innovation and creativity, inspire others in new ways of thinking about technology, access, and accessibility in the design of learning experiences.”

2018 AT&T Award recipients

The winning innovations and honorable mentions of the 2017 AT&T Faculty-Staff Awards in Instructional Technology are:

BEST ONLINE COURSE

Liz Owen-Boltz, CEP 812, Applying Educational Technology to Practice

The selection committee appreciated Owen-Boltz and her team’s well-designed, immersive technology choices. This course is not a first-time winner, but the lens through which it was presented was new. While the course was fully online, the judges appreciated the focus on universal design and accessibility. Liz not only made the course accessible, but taught her students about why accessibility plays a critical role in teaching and beyond.

Honorable Mention, Fully Online

Roz Jaffer, MGT 814, Managing Diversity in the Work Place

The selection committee appreciated Jaffer’s fresh use of Second Life as a means to immerse students in experiences focused on cultural sensitivity, growth, and understanding. While the instructor worked with learning designers from an outside firm, the Second Life innovation seemed to be very much her own, and the attention to detail and consideration for the student experience was measured to be an effective one.

BEST BLENDED/HYBRID/FLIPPED COURSE

Peter White, LB 145, Introductory Cell and Molecular Biology

The selection committee appreciated White’s innovative use of video to augment the face-to-face learning experience while creating a personable, student-focused design that lowered the barrier of fear that students experience in science courses. Further, we appreciated his approach to universal design and dedication to designing an experience that bridges performance gaps for students of all demographics and academic risk levels.

Honorable Mention – Blended/Hybrid/Flipped Course

Carmen DeLorenzo, ITL 101, Elementary Italian I

The selection committee appreciated how DeLorenzo designed purposeful in-person and electronic assessment opportunities, while offering gameful pedagogy and opportunities for students to directly apply the skills learned. This effective combination lent a caring, present instructor presence to both the online and in-person student experiences. Her attention to accessible development was also appreciated, with not only Quality Matters standards represented but also focused, intentional attention to the MSU accessibility guidelines. The course is truly student-focused.

BEST TECHNOLOGY ENHANCEMENT

Deric McNish, THR 401, Acting with Accents

The selection committee appreciated McNish’s well-designed, purposeful, and immersive technology choices. Technology was far from the focus of his pedagogical choices, rather he used it in artful ways to amplify his teaching strategies and engage his students in the learning experiences he created for—and with—them.

Honorable Mention, Technology-Enhanced

Bei Zhang, BLD 498, Focused Problems in Clinical Laboratory Science

The selection committee appreciated Zhang’s innovative use of PlayPosit to lend an approachable air to complex materials and assessments. With PlayPosit, in-person content was augmented in playful, applicable, and approachable ways. Further, the design and use of this tool gave students interactive assessment opportunities.

2018 AT&T Awards Selection Committee:

Five outstanding instructors and online and blended courses were selected as recipients of the 2016 AT&T Award Competition in Instructional Technology.

The 2016 recipients are:

BEST ONLINE COURSE

Katie Gregory, PSY 270

PSY 270: Community Psychology was designed to introduce students to the field of community psychology, including the study of social problems and their solutions (e.g., issues around education, food systems, gender-based violence, homelessness, juvenile justice, mental health, substance abuse and addiction, and veterans’ issues). Rather than focusing on deficits of individuals, community psychology examines the contextual and structural factors that affect individuals’ overall health.

BEST BLENDED COURSE

Cathleen McGreal, PSY 444

PSY 444: Developmental Psychology: Adolescence through Youth explores research and theory regarding development between puberty and adulthood including physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. Contexts of adolescence within the family and within the peer group including sexuality and romantic relationships are studied. According to psychologist John Santrock, widespread generalizations in U.S. culture have been formed by viewing a limited set of highly visible adolescents. Our course provides a detailed look at adolescence in order to move beyond pervasive societal stereotypes.

HONORABLE MENTION

Lisa Kopf, CSD 232

CSD 232: Descriptive Phonetics teaches phonetic transcription of the English language using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). IPA is used clinically in speech-language pathology and is especially important for assessing speech deficits and measuring improvements resulting from treatment. During CSD 232, other related topics are discussed such as basic anatomy and physiology of speech production and how each individual speech sound is produced. Finally, applications are discussed, such as: (1) identifying whether differences in a child’s speech sound production is developmental or disordered and (2) identifying differences in speech sound production due to dialectal and first language influences.

BEST TECHNOLOGY ENHANCEMENT (TIE)

Taiwoo Park, MI 484

MI 484: Innovative Interfaces aims to empower students to creatively design, develop, and evaluate new experimental interaction devices by combining various sensors and microcontrollers, without requiring extensive prior knowledge in computer science or electrical engineering. The course provides students hands-on experiences of interface design and development, including basics of sensor technologies for interaction devices, fundamental implementation skills for interface hardware and software, and user experience evaluation methodologies. Throughout the class, students learn how to realize their imagination of novel interaction devices and evaluate their usability.

Shannon Spasova, RUS 201-202

RUS 201-202: Second Year Russian I and II consists of 10 lessons that focus on tasks that students have to perform soon after arriving in Russia. The tasks are quite formulaic, but can be intimidating to students who are not used to them, while native speakers expect that this is common knowledge. Some examples include: buying food in a grocery store or a ticket for a bus, using the interface of a Russian cell phone, behavior in the home of host families, and etiquette during train travel. The hope is that students who complete these tasks in a simulated environment before their trip will better know what to expect and will therefore find it less intimidating to perform these tasks when in Russia. If students can have linguistic successes early in their experience abroad, they may be willing to take the linguistic risks necessary to grow both personally and in their language skills while in Russia.

AT&T Awards background

MSU established the AT&T Instructional Technology Awards program in 2005, through a gift from AT&T (then SBC). The award program is administered by the Office of the CIO and IT Services.

Since its inception, 63 instructional technology innovations have received this award.

In the coming academic year, these winners will present their innovations to the public in venues such as the Instructional Technology Brown Bag Seminar Series, faculty learning community meet-ups, and campus work group.

2015 AT&T Awards

The 2015 winning innovations and honorable mentions are:

BEST ONLINE COURSE

Leigh Graves Wolf and Michelle Schira Hagerman, CEP 811

CEP 811: Adapting Innovative Technology into Education is designed to push students to extend their conceptions of innovation. Focused on the integration of digital technologies in classroom settings, this course immerses students in the world of making, doing, and creating with new tools in new ways. The single core idea that defines the course is that innovative uses of technology can happen with a range of tools, in a range of ways, in a range of contexts.

HONORABLE MENTION

Charles Owen, CSE 335

CSE 335: Object-Oriented Software Design is a four credit, extremely work intensive course involving both individual and team activities, and is an important transition in the Computer Science curriculum. The goal of the course was to create a structure where students continuously learn then immediately apply what they’ve learned.

BEST BLENDED COURSE

Robby Ratan, TC 401

TC 401: Science Fiction, Communication & Technology focused on the ways in which science fiction portrays the use of communication technologies. The Zoom conferencing system, coupled with the Eli Review peer review platform engaged students, and kept them focused on the lectures and discussions at hand.

HONORABLE MENTION

Steve Williams, MD, OST 576

In OST 576: Integumentary System, students learn to diagnose common skin conditions by utilizing a flipped model in which preparation for class takes place elsewhere, while class sessions are focused on application. The course is organized the way physicians actually practice, based on evidence-based diagnosis. iClicker questions of increasing difficulty are presented at the beginning and the end of class.

BEST TECHNOLOGY ENHANCEMENT

Melanie M. Cooper, CEM 141

CEM 141: General Chemistry is the introductory, large enrollment chemistry course for STEM majors. With support from an National Science Foundation grant, the instructors are currently transforming the course to focus on the big ideas of chemistry and how it is used. iClickers are used for class participation and homework is assigned in the beSocratic system.

Shannon Schweitzer, THR 811

THR 811: Practicum Lighting: Design and Technology uses technology to help students with pre-visualization methods. The course teaches students how to design lights for theater, concerts, and architectural lighting. Built to emulate a true-to-life stage in a much smaller form, the Mini Light Lab allows students to gain hands on stage lighting experience in a low-risk environment.

“The AT&T Awards provide a venue for MSU to recognize outstanding faculty and staff whose innovation and creativity inspire others in new ways of using technology in instruction,” said Severin Grabski, lead judge for 2014 AT&T Awards; associate professor in the Department of Accounting & Information Systems, College of Business; and senior faculty advisor to the CIO of MSU.

“I, along with the other judges, was impressed with the quality, innovation, and excitement that MSU faculty and staff are able to infuse in their classes,” Grabski explained.

2014 AT&T Award recipients

The winning innovations and honorable mentions of the 2014 AT&T Faculty-Staff Awards in Instructional Technology are:

BEST ONLINE COURSE

Elizabeth Lavolette – LLT 346: Pedagogical Grammar

LLT 346 taught English grammar for pedagogical purposes, focusing on prospective or current teachers of English as a Second Language. The primary content focused on the topics teachers are most likely to encounter when teaching English to children, adolescents, or adults who would be considered beginner or intermediate level English speakers. The course used a custom programming option, creating its own learning environment using a WordPress website.

Stephen Thomas – ISB 202: Applications of Environmental Organismal Biology

This massive open online course (MOOC) iteration of ISB 202 had three main objectives for students: 1) improve of critical thinking skills, 2) increase science literacy, and 3) raise the understanding of science as a way of knowing and not just as a collection of facts. The ISB 202 MOOC was a collaboration between the College of Arts and Letters, MSU Libraries, and IT Services Learning Design and Technology, as well as graduate students representing an array of disciplines.

Honorable Mention

Heather Ricks – VM 810: Introduction to Food Safety and Professional Management

Formerly a blended course, VM 810 made the transition to fully online in 2013. Concerned with losing the in-person connection to students, the development team set to work brainstorming ways to develop a course that included virtual connections to the tangible campus and provided support for students who may need more help to succeed in a fully online environment.

BEST BLENDED COURSE

Eva Kassens-Noor – UP 488: Sustainable and Climate Resilient Cities

The goal for this course was to integrate innovative teaching practices to enhance students’ learning experiences through applied learning and real life learning experiences. UP 488 used a flipped classroom model, in which classroom content like slides and upfront lectures is provided online and in-class time involves frequent interaction with the instructor and peers.

Honorable Mention

Susan P. Convery – ACC 308: Government and Nonprofit Accounting

ACC 308 was taught in a Room for Engaged and Active Learning space in McDonel Hall with much of the lecture-based work done outside of the classroom and class time focused on activities to apply real world accounting skills.

BEST TECHNOLOGY ENHANCEMENT

Louise Mead – ZOL 890-601: Evolutionary Biology for Non-Life Scientists

ZOL 890-601 was structured into three four-week modules, assessing beyond students’ individual scientific skills to explore scientific application, collaborative scientific skills, writing and peer-review, and their ability to communicate in ways that are clearly understood by the general public. The course was co-registered with the University of Idaho, with classrooms connected via Google Hangout for group discussions, group presentations, and in-class lab experiences.

Honorable Mention

Joe Grimm – JRN 491: Brand You: Public Relations Topics in Journalism

JRN 491 was a fully online course focusing on the principles of digital career branding using LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. The courses also used digital badging to incentivize the learning experience.
