MSU IT will be upgrading D2L to a new user interface called Daylight on May 11, 2018.

The new interface will bring increased smartphone usability and a modern visual design to D2L. The core functionality of D2L will not be changing, and all course sites will automatically display the new look when Daylight is turned on.

Prepare for Daylight

Instructors and other course editors can prepare for the change by:

Exploring the new look and feel on MSU’s D2L test server.*

Updating references in their courses to the new language terms.

Learning how to work with the new My Courses list, course image, and banner.

Reviewing courses on a smartphone and considering changes to make content more mobile friendly.

This blog post will focus on tips for previewing your courses on the MSU test server and making language term updates to courses on production (d2l.msu.edu), primarily for Dropbox and News.

In future blog posts, look for tips on the My Courses list, course images, and making your content more responsive to mobile devices. (Also see all past D2L posts on tech.msu.edu.)

Previewing content on the test server

Instructors can preview how their D2L courses will look in Daylight by logging into the test server, msutest.brightspace.com, with their MSU NetID and password. Contact the MSU IT Service Desk if you are not able to log in. Alternatively, you can view D2L Brightspace tutorials to see how the new interface will look without previewing on the MSU test server.

*Important Note: The test server does not dynamically match our production server and currently contains course data back to spring 2017 and prior semesters. Content developed on this server is temporary.

Instructors can use their past courses to explore the new interface or use the export features in D2L to import their current courses on test. However, there are limits to the export/import process. (See the note at the end of this post for more details.)

D2L Daylight Open House events have been scheduled to help with regard to this process and answer any questions you have about the coming changes. Go to D2L Daylight Information to review basic information and to see the list of dates for the drop-in open house events.

Explore the new look and feel: Waffles & hamburgers

Once you login to the test site, you will see the “My Home” page with an updated mini-bar across the top. The links for D2L Email, ePortfolio, Self Registration (courses), and Help are still present, similar to the old My Home, but showing directly underneath, rather than in a navigation bar.

The icons have changed but the functionality is the same. Hovering over each icon will display the labels. The course selector, displayed by a waffle icon, allows you to search for courses, as well as pin courses to the top of a list for quick selection.

Clicking ”Advanced Search” gives even more options, such as search by role.

Tip: Use keywords in the text field to search for all courses in a given semester or year and pin them to the top for quick access.

(Example: “US18” for summer 2018 or “S18” for SS18 spring, US18 summer, and FS18 fall)

The menu items collapse when you resize the screen or view on a smartphone. The collapsed menu shows as a hamburger icon with three horizontal lines. Clicking on the menu icon opens up additional selections and brings back the waffle icon.

Make language term changes: Assignments & Announcements

D2L introduced new language terms several versions ago. MSU will adopt the new language defaults with the switch to Daylight.

The most prominent change is the term Dropbox changing to Assignments.

You will also notice that News is changing to Announcements, and Edit Course is changing to Course Admin. See the D2L Daylight Information page for the full list.

Looking at a default course Navbar, you will notice the change under the Assessments and Communication pull-down menus.

Old terms: Dropbox, News, and Edit Course

New terms: Assignments, Announcements, and Course Admin

It may be possible to still use Dropbox in your “Assignment” titles but students will no longer see the term “Dropbox” in D2L menus or tutorials. In the long run, it will cause less confusion if you refer your students to the “Assignment submission folder” because this is what students will see if they go to that area.

Example: “Upload Essay 1 to the Assignment submission folder”

Additional Tips for changing terms:

Go to Assessments > Dropbox (or Assignments after May 11) and use Bulk Edit to change your assignment titles (i.e., delete the term Dropbox from titles).

Go to the Content area and use the search field on the left above the Table of Contents to find items referring to Dropbox.

Within content items, use Ctrl-F to find references to dropbox.

Recommendation to update courses on production while previewing test

It is important to make these updates on the current production server as you prepare your courses for summer and fall semesters. Daylight is a setting that will be applied to all courses, past and future, on our current server on May 11, 2018.

Tip: Login to both the production server, d2l.msu.edu, and the test server, msutest.brightspace.com, and place the windows side-by-side. Make updates to your courses on production while viewing how they will look on test.

If you decide to develop your content on test, keep in mind that content is temporary and could be lost anytime. Even though this is not likely to happen, it is a good idea to keep a backup on your computer. Transferring content from test to production can be done by copy and paste for individual items (duplicating your work) or through an export/import process.

Limits to the export/import process

Some features do not export when backing up a course. Currently, the items not included in the process include custom homepages and widgets, custom navbars, groups, intelligent agents, and release conditions. Also, group topic discussions turn into regular discussions, which cannot be changed back to a group topic type. Course copy will preserve all these features, so that is the recommended process when copying courses within a particular server.

Additional support

MSU course admins and editors now have access to the Insights Portal for more advanced analytics reporting on courses in MSU D2L (Brightspace).

The Insights Portal now enables educators to use MSU D2L course statistics and visualizations to track, measure, and monitor student progress and help improve learner engagement aiding in student success.

Advanced features beyond the core course analytics in D2L include the Course Overview Widget, the Class Engagement Dashboard, and a variety of Portal Reports (hourly + daily). See below for some tips on using the D2L Insights Portal.

Course Overview Widget

The Course Overview widget provides an at-a-glance visual of course access over the past week. Hovering over each bar in the graph indicates the number of people that have accessed the site each day. Links within the widget give quick access to other Insights reports on Class Engagement (also found on the Classlist page – more details below), Course Access, and Tool Access.

The widget is now available on the standard MSU Course Homepage. You may need to add the widget if you have a custom homepage.

Course Access Report

The Course Access report can be customized to select by roles and date range. Click and drag on the edge of the shaded rectangle (also referred to as a sparkline) to increase the date range for the report.

The number of course access events can be downloaded as an Excel or CSV spreadsheet for further data analysis and record keeping.

Tool Access Report

The Tool Access report gives a closer look at the tools being used for select date ranges. Hover over the pie chart or access the table underneath it for individual tool access events. This data can also be exported.

Class Engagement Dashboard

The Class Engagement Dashboard can be accessed via a link in the Course Overview widget, as well as from a button at the top of the course Classlist.

The Class Engagement Dashboard displays the number of students that have not accessed the course in the past seven days and an interactive bar graph of the current Grade Distribution that lets instructors filter a class list by grade ranges and then initiate interventions via email.

Click on grade ranges to filter students. Check the select all box, and click on “Email Selected” to send a bcc message to students fitting the criteria (selected grade range).

The dashboard also displays a sortable table of values including the Current grade, Last visited, and number of Discussion posts (as of July 24 when Insights was turn on in the system).

Clicking on values within the table will direct you to the student progress report. Keep in mind that the progress view is limited to the course end date. Insights reports are not limited by the course end date.

Portal Reports (hourly + daily)

The Insights Portal reports can be accessed from the Edit Course menu or from the Course Tools menu options in a standard navigation bar.

There are a variety of reports to access with descriptions in the last column.

Running a report

To run an Insights report:

Click on the title of the report.

Click on “Select Values” for Roles (e.g., Select All, just Students).

Enter other filter criteria such as thresholds (varies depending on the report).

After making selections, click “Run Report.”

Click on “Show Filters” to change criteria for another report.

Reports can be exported as PDF, Excel, CSV, and XLSX files.

When finished, click “Done.”

Examples shown below include Academic Risk, Course Access Details, Quiz Item Analysis, and Quiz Question Statistics.

Academic Risk: Displays academically at-risk students filtered by the calculated grade with a selected risk threshold.

NOTE: Click the play icons wherever they occur to display charts.

Course Access Details: Displays course access statistics for each user over a selected date range, as well as a horizontal bar graph indicating the percentage of students meeting the filter criteria, such as enrolled with no access.

The following shows a graph of a large enrollment course over the first two days of the semester, showing that 35% of the students had not accessed the class.

Quiz Item Analysis: This report is limited to quizzes with multiple choice questions that have only one correct answer each. The question order can be random, but all learners must receive the same set of questions. The report assesses results for the first quiz attempt only.

This report interprets the number of first attempts, total points, standard deviation, reliability coefficient, highest and lowest scores, upper quartile, lower quartile, and median and average scores. The table of values also includes the following data per question: Percent correct, discrimination index, point biserial, and response frequencies.

Quiz Question Statistics: The report has both a Summary view and a Detailed view. The Summary view shows course quiz question responses and final quiz score distributions. Comparing the grade of the quiz question to the student quiz grades lets the instructor understand the distribution of results and whether the question separates the top students from everyone else.

The Detailed view shows what other questions the student is likely to have answered incorrectly. The report displays the most problematic questions first.

MSU recently migrated MSU D2L to the Brightspace/D2L cloud and upgraded from version 10.6.3 to 10.7.0 during May 11-13. (Read more on the D2L cloud migration and upgrade.)

Top 10 New D2L Features

Below are the top 10 new or improved features for instructors to check out. See the resource links at the bottom for more documentation, videos, and release notes.

1. Improvements to Intelligent Agents

Intelligent Agents can assist instructors by providing an automated notification when defined activity occurs in a course or when there is a lack of course activity.

Instructors now have the option to do a Practice Run. This runs the agent, and reports back a list of users who met the specified criteria. Users identified in a practice run are not notified or emailed.

The Agent List page contains a new column that lists the Next Run Date for scheduled
Agents. A new “history page” allows instructors to see each time the agent runs, which users it identifies, what emails have been sent, and details on any errors that occurred during the agent run.

Instructors can set a Name and Reply-To address for responses so that the automated emails can appear to come from the instructor instead of from a help desk. When learners reply, responses route to the email address specified. The values for Name and Reply-To address are not copied during a course copy and instructors need to update these fields post-copy.

For even more improvements, see 8 Ways that Intelligent Agents Just Got Smarter (Brightspace Community).

2. Group membership in grades export

Instructors can now include group information when exporting grades.
Go to Assessments > Grades > Enter Grades > Export

3. New design for creating quiz questions

A new question creation experience has been turned on for True/False, Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blanks, Written Response, and Short Answer question types. The Long Answer (LA) question type is now called Written Response (WR).

Instructors will find the new interface for creating questions simpler and more intuitive. Quizzes will be viewed and function the same for students taking them. During question creation, an Options menu is provided for more advanced features.

The new experience can be turned on and off as needed per course without affecting existing quiz functionality (see below).

4. New option for single discussion topic filtered by groups

Instructors can now create one discussion that is filtered by groups rather than having to create separate restricted discussions for each group.

Advantages: Rubrics and grading can be linked to one grade item for assessing.

Limitations: Currently, there is not an option to post to all groups. However, this is planned to be an option in the next upgrade, D2L 10.7.1, later in the month.

Existing group discussions will continue to work and instructors will be given a choice to create them the old way, with one topic per group, or try out the new group-filtered option.

5. Grading exemptions feature added

Instructors can now use an exemption as a reason why a learner has not completed a grade item. Previously, a blank grade could mean the learner was exempt or hadn’t submitted the item. If “Treat Ungraded Items as 0” is turned on, exempt grade items are treated as empty grades, not as zero (0).

For more on the topic, see Using grade exemptions (Brightspace Help).

6. Improvements to Class Progress display

Several improvements were made to the Class Progress tool (formerly called User Progress). The Grades tab now displays which grades have been dropped or exempted. Also, the weighting of grade items and category weights are displayed with grades.

7. Notification for dropbox assignment submissions

A new field in the dropbox settings allows instructors to input any email address(es) to be notified on submission of an assignment.

8. Automatically release final grades

This new feature allows the overall grade to be seen by learners as grades are entered so that instructors don’t have to manually release them every semester. Final grades released before the end of a course show learners their current progress. By default, the final grades are not released.

Instructors (Course Admins) may now select a new checkbox in the gradebook settings to turn this feature on at the course level. Click on the question mark for more information when in the settings area: Assessments > Grades > Settings > Calculation Options

The title for Final Calculated or Final Adjusted Grade can be edited in Manage Grades (i.e., change Final Grade to Overall Grade or Total Points if releasing early).

9. Accessibility Checker and other HTML editor improvements

An accessibility checker is now available for any tools where an instructor or student can access the HTML Editor. The accessibility checker is available at the bottom of the HTML Editor bar, near the check spelling icon.

Use the accessibility checker on existing content to assist you in finding items that may need updating to meet accessibility standards, such as alt text on images and contrasting colors.

Other improvements made to the HTML editor:

Content can be pasted from Microsoft Word with most of the formatting retained.

Images can be pasted directly into the HTML editor.

Equations can be displayed as in-line text with other text while editing.

10. Quicklink option to link directly to a specific announcement

The “Insert Quicklink” option in the HTML editor allows instructors to add links to outside resources (choose URL) as well as link internally to other areas of the course. The list now includes the option to link directly to individual news announcements.

After creating a link, you can edit the link to open in a new window. Simply click on the link and then click on the Insert Quicklink icon again to select the target window.

MSU recently upgraded D2L to version 10.6.3 with some exciting new features.

Top 10 New D2L Features

Below are the top 10 new or improved items and tips for instructors to check out. See the resource links at the bottom for more documentation, videos, and release notes.

1. Awards tool

The Awards tool enables instructors to issue badges and certificates which can also be based on release conditions. Use this tool to gamify your course and reward students for completing tasks, obtaining a high score, helping classmates, etc. D2L provides a library of badges to choose from or instructors can create their own.

2. Course Schedule

The “Overdue” tab in the Course Schedule lists activities past the due date as long as they are listed in the Content area and use a due date. The tab only shows up for students who have an overdue item and disappears when there are none.

3. Release conditions

The release conditions criteria now include the NOT operator for checklists, competency, objectives, content topic visits, discussion posts, dropbox submissions, grade scores, and quiz and survey attempts. For example: Within an intelligent agent, an email can be sent to the initiating user when they do not post to a discussion.

4. Sum of post scores

This “sum of post scores” option totals discussion post scores for an entire topic. For example: Give 3 points for a main thread and 1 point for a reply for a total of 4 points.

5. Automatic rubric score transfer when assessing Discussions

The Overall Score of an associated rubric now transfers automatically to the Topic Score.

6. Selected quiz answers highlighted

The entire area of a selected quiz answer is highlighted blue. Other answers that users hover over are highlighted gray to indicate that clicking anywhere within the highlighted area will change the selected answer.

7. Quiz attempts override for individuals

This new quiz attempts override option enables instructors to specify a different number of quiz attempts allowed for individual learners in the “Special Access” tab.

8. Names displayed on single user groups

There is a new group category called “Single user, member-specific groups.” The first and last name of the learner is displayed in the name of the group. This feature is useful for creating restricted personal journals in the discussion area.

9. Show forum description for all topics

There’s a new option in the Discussion Forum settings that allows the forum description to display in all discussion topic descriptions contained in the forum.

10. Copy/Move discussion thread replies

Instructors can now optionally select replies when copying a discussion thread from one discussion topic to another. Also includes an option to delete the original post after the copy completes.
