MSU IT supported upgrades to 33 instructional spaces that help with student engagement and student success initiatives.

Upgrades are part of a multi-year planning process at MSU and also involve Teaching and Learning Environment (TLE) funding requests from MSU IT.

Updating classrooms & computer labs

MSU IT works closely with other units on campus, including the Office of Planning and Budgets and Infrastructure Planning and Facilities, to support classroom and computer lab improvements. Many improvements are made during university breaks, including over the summer.

“Thoughtfully designed learning environments are essential to the success of the student at MSU. Providing learning spaces with effective technology allows faculty to implement innovative pedagogy that improves learning outcomes for students,” said Jen-Nien (Ryan) Yang, Associate Director, MSU IT Academic Information Technology.

“Students are more engaged through various collaborative tools and presentation technology that aligns with active learning strategies for deeper learning and understanding,” Yang continued.

2017 MSU renovations

First and Second Floors of Bessey including a lecture hall, eight classrooms, and a Room for Engaged and Active Learning (REAL)

331 Case including comprehensive renovation to upgrade a classroom

146 Giltner Hall including technology improvements to lecture hall

McDonel Hall Kiva including technology improvements

141 and 245 Music Building including comprehensive renovation to two classrooms

E100 and A213 Veterinary Medicine including a lecture hall and multipurpose classroom

B122 Wells Hall including technology upgrades and acoustical improvements to lecture hall

18 technology cart upgrades in various rooms across campus

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">20738</post-id>

Check out trends in active learning that can benefit MSU

Nick Noel

Blog

Active learning

classroom technology

faculty

flipped classrooms

instructors

like Academic Technology

makerspace

micro-learning

real

rooms for enaged and active learning

virtual reality

It seems that every year those who work in education whip out their magic crystal balls and attempt to predict what trends will have the greatest impact in the classroom. All of us want to create meaningful experiences for the students and often that means trying to anticipate what their classroom expectations will be. If possible, we would even like to exceed those expectations.

Personalization & engagement

The past few years have seen a move toward a greater emphasis on personalization and engagement. In many ways, we are attempting to artificially recreate the ways in which we learned before formal institutions, when we experienced things in the world, instead of hearing about them in a classroom.

Luckily, technology has allowed us to start crafting those experiences in a directed and purposeful way. At the same time, the benefits of housing these experiences inside a center of learning can still be utilized.

Classroom customization

The first major trend, though it should really be called a continuation of a trend, is the emphasis on adjustable classrooms and makerspaces. While from the outside these may appear to be separate things, they really are centered around the same goal of fitting the classroom experience to students’ needs.

Campuses across the United States have begun implementing flipped classrooms that focus on allowing students to collaborate easily. In addition, the idea of the lecture hall as the primary go-to for knowledge is being re-examined often with an online, asynchronous component. The Rooms for Engaged and Active Learning (REAL) are an example of flipped classrooms at MSU.

Makerspaces, where students can create and actively engage in learning through experiences, are also becoming more prevalent. MSU has several examples of these spaces. There are makerspaces at the MSU Library called MakeCentral, as well as the MSU Hatch. See Make @ State for more MSU makerspace resources.

Micro-learning

Micro-learning is a style of imparting information in small chunks taking into consideration our short attention spans. The basic idea is to provide short bursts of information, and then allow students space and time to reflect and discuss that information. This is another trend moving away from the traditional classroom lecture format.

The most obvious example of micro-learning is the emphasis on short instructional videos in online and flipped classes. This is exemplified in the model advocated by Coursera and other platforms that offer Massive Open Online Courses or MOOCs. IT Services also recommends this approach when instructors are designing and creating online videos. More information about our approach to instructional videos can be found at the Hub’s blog post “Why Choose Video.”

The micro-learning trend is not confined to video or even to the digital realm. Podcasts, games, and simulations could all be added to any instructional style. All that is required is some planning and creative thinking.

Virtual reality

There probably isn’t a more dramatic example of the future educational possibilities than the advent of learning experiences in virtual reality. While there has been a continued effort to create digital learning simulations for decades, the technology hasn’t been available until recently to make these experiences accessible to a wide audience.

Now, not only is it possible for students to experience places that they would never have normally been able to travel, but they can also craft their own experiences and share them with others. Two services, Google Expeditions and ThinkLink 360 are great places to start exploring how to integrate virtual reality into the classroom.

Moving forward in education

These new active learning trends provide some amazing opportunities for faculty and instructors to engage and excite students. Never before in history have the tools and resources been more accessible to provide lasting and meaningful experiences to broad groups of people.

Learning should be fun for the student and the teacher, so try something new in your classroom. It doesn’t even have to be a whole course redesign, it could just be a lesson, or a single activity. If you tell your students that you are trying something new, I’m sure most would love to give you feedback.

MSU IT provides instructional design and development services to help faculty instructors discuss and determine how to integrate new active learning options. REAL spaces are specifically designed to enable lively interaction, enhanced learning, and increased faculty and student engagement.

A ballroom in the Union with tables and chairs taken by Dave Goodrich and shared freely.

The initial REAL classroom spaces in McDonel, rooms 2 and 38, were still under construction. On the morning of the first ever REAL Faculty Academy session, we entered the Union room we were using before the REAL spaces were completed and took this picture.

Yes, this was the room where we were to teach about using learning environments conducive to active learning strategies. Do you see the irony? It is hard to miss.

We wondered, “How do you highlight problem-based, inquiry-based, team-based, cooperative-based, and collaborative-based pedagogy in a room designed for traditional sage-on-the-stage instruction?” So there we stood, facing the challenge that instructors face daily all over the world.

Different classroom options

No matter what your instructional approach is, there are classrooms all over Michigan State University’s campus designed to support your pedagogy.

For instance, did you know we have different types of classrooms to help you implement active learning strategies, such as active learning classrooms, REAL spaces, and classrooms with intermediate technical capabilities?

These classrooms are equipped with technology far beyond the traditional computer and projector set-up, and they are designed to support group work and hands-on activity so that students are more engaged with the lesson. You can also use one of our computer labs to give students practice with research and online programs during class time.

Additionally, there are record ready classrooms so you can quickly and easily share helpful instructional snippets online with students or take advantage of the real-time conferencing capabilities.

Classroom support

Finally, whether you are just getting started with implementing active learning strategies and technology in the classroom, or you would like more advanced support, please contact the MSU IT Service Desk at (517) 432-6200 for help with classroom technology, classroom support, media equipment, printers, or unlocking computer lab rooms.

Check out more classroom support information.

As a bonus, learn more about course guidelines and best practices and other active learning tools.

Breana Yaklin also contributed to this post.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">13768</post-id>

<!-- Performance optimized by W3 Total Cache.
