IT Services Practice Regarding Remote Wipe on Mobile Devices Using Exchange ActiveSync

Overview

Microsoft Exchange 2010 has several mobile device remote administration tools built into its software, and many of these tools can be modified. IT Services chose to turn off many of these tools. However, some are on because of built-in defaults and cannot be deactivated.

One of these defaults is a tool referenced as “Remote Wipe.” A remote wipe on a mobile device, such as a mobile phone, will reset that device to its original factory settings. Any personal data on that device is lost and all user names and passwords are removed. This is a feature to keep personal information safe should a device become lost or stolen. The remote wipe tool is available via Outlook Web Access Exchange. IT Services does not and will not activate this action.

Information on self-initiating a remote wipe is posted at “Using Campus AD Outlook Web Access to Remotely Wipe a Mobile Device” knowledge base article.

IT Services’ Practice

IT Services’ practice regarding remote wipe of personal mobile devices is that we do not and will not initiate this action. If, however, someone would like to initiate a remote wipe for their mobile device, they may contact the IT Service Desk at (517) 432-6200 or visit ithelp.msu.edu for assistance. The IT Service Desk will first confirm the person’s identity and then help them through the steps necessary to activate this safety feature.

If an individual has lost their password or otherwise are unable to get into Outlook Web Access Exchange to facilitate a remote wipe, IT Service Desk will help them recover access through the normal procedures.

Questions regarding IT Services’ practice regarding remote wipe of personal mobile devices should be directed to the IT Service Desk at (517) 432-6200. See also the “Using Campus AD Outlook Web Access to Remotely Wipe a Mobile Device” knowledge base article.
