Upgrade Server Operating Systems

WHAT IS IT?

  • Upgrade the server operating system software prior support end date. Microsoft Windows Server is the enterprise operating system supporting many of the applications and reporting systems at the University.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

  • Windows 2008 is no longer under Microsoft support effective January 14, 2020, which means no additional security patches will be provided for the 2008 version.
  • In order to maintain a secure environment, MSU is upgrading the managed servers to version 2016 prior to December 2019.

CURRENT STATUS

  • Plan Stage Complete with Director Approval with one addition.
    • Management would like a separate work stream added to the project; however, tracked separately to determine the other Windows servers requiring an upgrade to 2016.
      • Different resources will be asked to provide the server information for the additional stream of work.
  • Team continues to work on the AISDBx database servers, Tracey Time, Ellucian (lead by Rich C), and Slicer.
  • Team will skip the Design Phase and cycle through Build, Test, Deploy for the remainder of the project.

MILESTONES:

  • Build Stage (October 2019)
  • Test Stage (October 2019)
  • Deploy Stage (December 2019)
