I am pleased to present the 2020-2021 MSU IT Annual Report. The past two years have presented unique challenges to our organization and university. This annual report showcases some of our larger initiatives and reflects how MSU IT met those challenges for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years.
The pandemic has been at the forefront of university operations as MSU’s COVID response has relied heavily on the agile delivery of technology solutions. MSU IT teams have continued to play integral roles in the university’s remote and hybrid operations as well as the transitions between modalities necessary for campus health and safety.
However, the pandemic has not deterred our organization from building for the future. Guided by our commitments to delivering outstanding service, providing an excellent experience, and engaging in continuous improvement to maximize value to the university, we have invested in enabling the university’s excellence in education, research, outreach, and operations through the delivery of world-class information technology solutions.
During this time, MSU IT refreshed its mission, vision and values and created a strategic framework for aligning with the university’s strategic plan. This framework is designed to reinforce and strengthen alignment with MSU’s mission across four pillars: enhance and enable education, advance research, expand outreach, and support university operations. MSU IT is also strategically focused on the following themes in alignment with the MSU strategic plan: Diversity, equity, and inclusion; Student, faculty, and staff success; Sustainability and stewardship. As a service organization, MSU IT is committed to being agile and responsive to evolving university needs.
Feedback from our campus partners has informed a number of structural changes to our organization to more closely align our technology services with MSU’s mission. To further strengthen those changes, we have welcomed new leaders who are mission-driven, think strategically, are committed to working collaboratively, and are dedicated to providing outstanding experiences for our stakeholders. For more information about our leadership team, please visit our IT organization page.
We are proud to support MSU’s mission of education, research, and outreach. When you view this report, I hope our focus on collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and delivering outstanding experience is evident. I also hope you will recognize some of the many places that our technology services support and enable your work with the university.

Every institution with a virtual presence must face today’s reality of ever-present cyber threat actors who aim to disrupt, deceive, and extort. A simple internet search for “ransomware” will reveal the geometric growth the impact of these actors have in higher education. In the realm of cybersecurity, effective prevention, response, and remediation of such threats are critical. For Michigan State University, MSU IT works tirelessly to serve these functions and protect institutional data.
When leadership in Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF) filed a request for proposal, a new integrated workplace management system (IWMS) had long been on the radar.
