Research Cyberinfrastructure

MSU IT supports faculty and researchers in helping solve the world’s toughest problems.

MSU Research Cyberinfrastructure (RCI) supports campus and affiliated researchers with computation and qualitative analysis, through technology, educational and consulting offerings, with a goal of improving efficiency in reaching outcomes in basic and applied research and development.

IT Services has created this new research technology team to support the information technology needs of the research community at Michigan State University.

This team will coordinate and deliver information technology services, educational offerings and consulting through various stages of the grant life cycle. We are partnering closely with groups such as ICER, MSU Libraries, and other research units to enhance and improve the service offerings for the research community.

Services

Service Catalog

The RCI service catalog defines and categorizes services that university students, faculty, and staff may request from MSU IT Services. The service catalog is available here: https://tech.msu.edu/service-catalog/research-technology-collaboration/

Research Consulting requests

The Research Intake Form is an online form for the MSU research community to request technology support for various research projects. This will allow researchers to put in a request for guidance on new, existing, or future projects that require technological needs beyond their ability.

The form has a total of 8 questions to give consultants details about the research being conducted. This service will help researchers gain needed technology support while being able to focus their efforts on the actual research and writing. Consultants are made up of a collaboration of units who have the skillset to provide technology support for researchers in various disciplines.

Data Storage finder (DSF)

The Data Storage Finder is an interactive tool that allows users to determine which storage services are most suitable for their needs. Different types of data require different modes of storage. Based on features needed and restrictions set in place for certain data, researchers will be able to choose a storage service accordingly.

The Data Storage Finder allows for users to go through a series of questions that will then show the options they have available to choose from. Based on how researchers answer each question, the Data Storage Finder eliminates storage services that will not work for them. If in the end they feel they did not find the information needed or the correct storage service, they have the option to schedule a consultation.

The Data Storage Finder can be a tool for the research community at MSU to begin accurately storing data with the correct services. Putting data in the right place will help alleviate losing data or not having the right type of security. There are storage options to store information for classes to large data sets for research, making this a tool for everyone.

No matter what type of data a researcher has, using the Data Storage Finder as a guide to make data storage decisions will be beneficial. The DSF is available at: https://data-storage-finder.tech.msu.edu/

Research Facilitation Network (RFN)

The Research Facilitation Network is a community of research facilitators that are supporting a wide range of technology services for the MSU research community. Members could be faculty, staff or students. The goal of this community is to build a constructive space for researchers and technologists to communicate about their experiences, best practices, ask questions and develop professional relationships.

The RFN will provide and protect an environment where research infrastructure, services, and solutions are innovative, readily available, and utilized to provide exceptional support to students, faculty and staff in their endeavors to uphold the MSU mission. For those interested in participating, you can join the RFN using Teams code ltkm3jy.

The RFN Teams site is available here. Find out more about MSU research data management, control, and access. Additional information is available on the Human Research Protection Program at MSU.

Projects

  • CC Networking Infrastructure (Science DMZ)
    • This project involves building a Science DMZ at Michigan State University. This enhancement to MSU’s network architecture will facilitate campus researchers’ ability to share huge volumes of data (tens to thousands of terabytes) with the national and global external research community at speeds of up to 100 gigabits per second.
    • This project also includes a unique application of software-defined networking (SDN) that uses the security policies defined in the firewalls.
