Modernizing MSU’s Network

Picture a vibrant college campus, buzzing with activity. Now, imagine this campus without a network connecting computers to servers, students to educational resources, or researchers to colleagues. The network, often overlooked, is the invisible force that powers everything on MSU’s campus.

As part of its commitment to achieving stewardship and sustainability goals, MSU IT has invested in a multi-year network infrastructure and improvement plan that enhances the user experience.

Recent accomplishments include:

  • Central campus fiber optic improvements in partnership with the Farm Lane Bridge construction project.
  • Upgrades of fiber, wired, wireless and audio-visual solutions in the Duffy Daugherty Football Complex, in partnership with the Football Complex Renovation & Addition construction project.
  • Addition of fiber connectivity and network equipment installation at the MSU Horse Teaching and Research Center.
  • Fiber connectivity upgrades at the Music Complex and Cowles House.

Upcoming work includes:

  • Full suite of network and audio-visual deployment at the Multicultural Center, including high-density outdoor wireless, in partnership with the Multicultural Center construction project.
  • Network upgrades throughout Fee Hall, Spartan Stadium administrative offices and press boxes, the Business College, the Main Library and other buildings.
  • Network enhancements at the College of Veterinary Medicine in support of college re-accreditation.
  • Partnership and planning for multiple new construction projects that include high bandwidth installations for research and improved connectivity for over 30 university classrooms with a hundred-plus seats.

Network infrastructure upgrades and enhancements will continue across campus buildings and new construction to modernize wired and wireless networks and improve campus fiber network connectivity and reliability.

These upgrades improve the network and enhance every Spartan’s experience. They support new and critical campus infrastructure needs, simplify the network, and bolster service resilience. As a result, the MSU community will enjoy increased bandwidth, less downtime, and greater flexibility as capacity continues to grow.
