MSU IT is celebrating a significant milestone in IT modernization. The successful completion of the Oracle Exadata Migration Project, completed this spring, marks a transformative step forward in our IT landscape. This project brings numerous benefits to campus, providing a central environment with a smaller server footprint for all enterprise application databases, which addresses future growth and sustainability.
The work completed secures faster high-performance database services and operations, while maintaining the data on campus to address data residency, security, scalability, and connectivity control.
Enhanced data performance and security
One standout achievement of this project is the migration of 28 databases. This change translates to increased data performance, ensuring that our systems run more efficiently and effectively. Additionally, the migration supports the latest Oracle version, which brings enhanced security features to protect valuable MSU data.
Optimized IT landscape
In a move to streamline our IT infrastructure, an additional 25 databases were retired. This optimization reduces the number of direct user database connections, simplifying our IT landscape and making it easier (and cheaper) to manage and maintain. This not only improves efficiency and cost-savings but also reduces potential points of failure, contributing to a more robust and reliable system.
Impact on enterprise applications
The migration project has positively impacted nine enterprise applications used by campus departments to support key university operations, including those that handle HR, finance, student information, identity management, and other functions. By upgrading these applications, we ensure they run smoothly and securely, supporting the diverse needs of our university community.
Upgraded client systems
A total of 450 client systems were upgraded to a supported version as part of this project. This upgrade is vital for mitigating security risks and ensuring compliance with industry standards. It means that our users can work with confidence, knowing that their systems are secure and up to date.
Looking ahead
The success of the Oracle Exacta Migration Project is a testament to the hard work and dedication of over 16 teams across IT. Their collaborative efforts have made this complex project a reality, showcasing the power of teamwork and innovation.
Enhanced performance, improved security, and a streamlined IT landscape are just the beginning. MSU IT is committed to leveraging these advancements to support our community’s needs and drive future innovations.
Thanks to the IT teams and campus partners involved in making this project a success and helping MSU advance its operational excellence. Your efforts have made a lasting impact on our university, and we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.
