Pre-award grant support includes proposal development and writing contribution to proposal sections that are relevant to the collaborating research units.
Pre-Award grant support is offered by the Center for Statistical Training and Consulting (CSTAT), the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI), the Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research (ICER), ITS Analytics & Data Solutions, and MSU Libraries.

CENTER FOR STATISTICAL TRAINING AND CONSULTING (CSTAT)
FEATURES
- CSTAT collaborates with PIs in the planning and writing of the grant proposal including refining research questions, aims, and hypotheses; study design
- Sample size calculations and justification
- Data management considerations
- Statistical methods
- Budget justifications and facilities document
- Analysis of available pilot data
- CSTAT personnel serve as key personnel, co-investigators, or consultants on contracts and grants
PRE-REQUISITES
- Must be able to be a grant PI (I.e., must be MSU faculty, permanent academic staff, or similar)
- Must request service far enough in advance of submission deadline to give the statistician adequate opportunity to do meaningful work on the proposal
CHARGES
- CSTAT statisticians should be included in the budget corresponding to the effort required (Minimum 5% FTE for each year of the post award)
- Free, if PI is member of a college- or unit-level sponsor of CSTAT (depending on terms of the sponsorship agreement)

INSTITUTE FOR CYBER-ENABLED RESEARCH (ICER)
FEATURES
- Assists PIs in developing estimates for computing resources needed in terms of time, funding, disk space, etc.
- Provides letters of support, facilities statements, budget justifications, and suggested wording for data management plans
- Helps PIs put together REU supplements for grants
- Assists PIs in developing a work plan and budget estimate for software and workflow development, customized training, and topic-specific support (for, e.g., bioinformatics or computational modeling).
