Mainframe-Web Replication
Description: With employing DARSTRAN and MQSeries Queuing technology, this home-grown data replication system transforms mainframe CA-IDMS network database into relational database. 51 IDMS records are converted and loaded into SISIDMS on a SQL server. SISIDMS, its record format resembling the one in SIS, requires knowledge of IDMS for navigating its information. To address this issue and to minimize resource conflicts, another relational database, SISREPL is created. The tables in this database are set up as close as possible to SISINFO. And they are much familiar and easier to use. Applications are strongly discouraged to access SISIDMS directly. Except for maintenance, UPDTREPL and DARSMQOD services must be up all the time. A third service DARSLOAD is up only when reload or initial load. J82SCQY runs hourly to check the status of all three services. For documentation regarding initial load, reload, or adding IDMS records to replication system, please see IDMS_Replication folder in aisclient share drive. Since going live in May 2006, there is one application already using replicated data and another one is in the process of making changes to take full advantage of replicated data. As of 2016, several applications use the replicated data.

Both student and course/section criteria and restrictions are enforced as each enrollment action occurs. Behind the csene, there is a mainframe application, CE does the actual updating student records process. All web enrollment transactions are, so-to-speak passed back to CE, or vice versa, such as mainframe passing error message to web. The communication between web server (Web Enroll) and mainframe (CE) is depended on a mainframe integration interface product, called InnerAccess. Web Enroll logs all enrollment related activities onto WEBENRL SQL database. Whether it is successful or unsuccessful logon to the system, or server reboot, or any errors, they are all kept in session log table. The system also keeps track how many transactions it had processed on hourly and daily basis. Parameters, applications and certain session variables can be changed on-the-fly. Only authorized personnel are allowed to access those Admin web pages. During peak enrollment period, queue management page can increase or decrease number of lines connecting to mainframe to control the flow of enrollment activity.
