MSU provides wireless throughout the MSU campus and select off-site locations.

Connecting to MSU Wi-Fi

eduroam is always the best network option and should be used whenever possible. When attempting to connect a mobile device, computer, or laptop, always use eduroam.

Connecting to eduroam for the first time

  1. Download and install the JoinNow application using this link.
  2. Once redirected, click JoinNow to begin the download.
  3. Once the download is complete, open JoinNow from your downloads folder and click next.
  4. This will redirect you to MSU’s single sign on.
    • Login to your MSU account using your NetID and password.
  5. Once logged in, you go back to the JoinNow application.
    • Your device is now setup to automatically connect to eduroam.
    • You’ll connect across campus and have access to your campus resources globally, everywhere that eduroam exists, without any additional setup.

Whether traveling across campus or studying at another research institution, eduroam provides Spartans the most secure connectivity, as well as access to their campus experience across the globe, without ever worrying about what Wi-Fi network to use. eduroam is available at over 10,000 universities, schools, public spaces, and research and education institutions in more than one-hundred territories around the world.

When attempting to connect a smart TV or gaming console, use MSUnet 3.0.

Connecting to MSUnet 3.0

  1. To register, you’ll need to use your laptop or mobile device
  2. Go to dhcp.msu.edu
  3. Sign in with your MSU NetID and password and click Register that device
  4. You’ll then have the option to Register Another Device
  5. Find and enter the device’s MAC address, name of device, and location.
    1. If you can’t find the MAC address, just search the internet for ‘MAC address for [name of device]’.
  6. Click Register Now, then I agree
  7. When you’re done, restart your device

Setting up a Department Wireless Network

If your unit or department is thinking about setting up its own wireless network, please contact the MSU IT Service Desk for more information at (517) 432-6200 or by submitting an online form.

Any MSU unit wireless network not integrated with MSUnet Wireless should follow these guidelines:

  • The SSID “MSUnet Wireless” and any SSID containing the words “MSUnet Wireless” are reserved for devices belonging to the MSUnet Wireless network.
  • The transmitting power of access points should be limited to the minimum that is needed to cover the desired area.

MSUnet Wireless Standards

MSU supports the following Wi-Fi standards – 802.11a, b, g, n, ac, ax, be.

To maintain Wi-Fi quality, MSU IT will constrain any network devices with incorrect or conflicting configurations that adversely impact the performance of MSUnet Wireless.
