Web Hosting

IT Services Web Hosting offers MSU units and MSU-affiliated organizations the ability to put their websites online with the Internet name of their choice. IT Services manages the web server setup and routine system tasks.

There are basic and full web hosting options to meet various client needs. Additionally, there is a Public Web Server (Windows environment) hosting option.

Clients manage their content while IT Services manages daily system administration (including nightly backups), monthly log file rotation, and software upgrades.

Basic Web Hosting

The basic option is intended for relatively simple websites comprised mostly of HTML and CSS files.

PHP and other server side scripting languages are not allowed with the basic option and storage must be located in personal or departmental AFS space.

Full Web Hosting (UNIX Environment)

The full option sets a website up as a virtual host on IT Services servers in the Computer Center Datacenter.

By virtualizing a hosted website, overall energy is saved and resources can be further maximized at the university level.

The full option is necessary for most websites including those using content management systems such as Cascade, WordPress, or Drupal.

Public Web Server (Windows Environment)

Public Web Server provides Windows server environment where units can develop and run their HTML/ASP/SQL Server applications within a shared environment.

Being part of a shared environment means many applications by other MSU units are running on the same server. It is recommended units don't run university mission critical applications in this shared environment.

The Public Web Server Microsoft environment includes Microsoft IIS, ASP/HTML, Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access (SQL recommended), SQL Server deployment/management desktop, and JMail.
