MSU IT supports faculty and researchers in helping solve the world’s toughest problems.
MSU Research Cyberinfrastructure (RCI) supports campus and affiliated researchers with computation and qualitative analysis, through technology, educational and consulting offerings, with a goal of improving efficiency in reaching outcomes in basic and applied research and development.
IT Services has created this new research technology team to support the information technology needs of the research community at Michigan State University. This team will coordinate and deliver information technology services, educational offerings and consulting through various stages of the grant life cycle.
We are partnering closely with groups such as ICER, MSU Libraries, and other research units to enhance and improve the service offerings for the research community.
Services
- Service Catalog
- The RCI service catalog defines and categorizes services that university students, faculty, and staff may request from MSU IT Services.
- Research Consulting requests
- The Research Intake Form allows the MSU research community to request technology support for various research projects.
- Tech support can then be provided with minimal disruption to the research process.
- Consultants are made up of a collaboration of units who have the skillsets to provide tech support for researchers in various disciplines.
- Data Storage finder (DSF)
- The Data Storage Finder is an interactive tool that allows researchers to determine which storage services are most suitable for their unique needs.
- This includes a questionnaire that recommends storage services based on the researcher’s answers.
- Researchers can schedule a consultation if they have additional questions or concerns.
- Research Facilitation Network (RFN)
- The Research Facilitation Network is a community of research facilitators (staff, faculty, or students) that support a wide range of technology services for the MSU research community.
- The goal of this community is to build a constructive space for researchers and technologists to communicate about their experiences, share best practices, ask questions, and develop professional relationships.
- For those interested in participating, you can join the RFN on Microsoft Teams using code ltkm3jy.

CC Networking Infrastructure (Science DMZ)
This project involves building a Science DMZ at Michigan State University. This enhancement to MSU’s network architecture will facilitate campus researchers’ ability to share huge volumes of data (tens to thousands of terabytes) with the national and global external research community at speeds of up to 100 gigabits per second.
This project also includes a unique application of software-defined networking (SDN) that uses the security policies defined in the firewalls.
