New features added to MSU MediaSpace, including captioning and lecture capture

MSU Information Technology added captioning, lecture, capture, and other new features to Kaltura MediaSpace video storage on October 19 for MSU students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, MSU expanded MediaSpace bandwidth and storage to support continued growth.

Captioning

MediaSpace users can now order video captioning at no charge. This machine captioning service is 70-80% accurate, and there’s an editing tool for correcting any captions. Read more about how to use captioning within MediaSpace.

Media captioning is increasing important for web accessibility. See more MSU Web Accessibility resources.

Lecture capture

CaptureSpace is a new desktop capture client downloaded from MediaSpace. CaptureSpace offers lecture capture recording, automated publishing, and interactive viewing.

Content creators may capture multi-stream recordings of up to three video inputs synchronized with a PowerPoint presentation or screen capture. Viewers can navigate to desired content, search through slide text, switch between video streams, and view picture in picture.

See more from Kaltura on CaptureSpace. MSU also has some MediaSpace lecture capture resources.

Other new features

  • Attachments and Downloads: Users can upload a file (e.g., PowerPoint presentation) that can be shared and downloaded from MediaSpace.
  • Replace Media: Users can re-upload a video over top of an existing item to replace it and preserve the original analytics.
  • Analytics: Users can access more detailed analytics regarding each video. (Previously only play count was available.) Read more on analytics.
