MSU CIO named one of 30 Higher Ed IT Influencers to Follow in 2022

Michigan State University Executive Vice President for Administration and CIO Melissa Woo was named this week as one of 30 Higher Education IT Influencers to Follow in 2022 by EdTech: Focus on Higher Education. The online publication selected 30 individuals who use their platforms to amplify higher ed and propel universities forward.

EdTech pointed to Woo’s passion for developing rising IT leaders, as well as her focus on advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in IT. She has been a vocal advocate for higher education on Twitter since joining in 2008, using the platform to have a voice in conversations around DEI and IT leadership.

In addition to her roles at MSU, Woo sits on the EDUCAUSE Board of Directors. She received the EDUCAUSE 2019 DEI Leadership and 2012 Rising Star Awards, and has served on EDUCAUSE’s DEI Advisory Committee, the 2012 Conference Program Committee and Professional Development Advisory Committee. In addition, she has presented at EDUCAUSE conferences on multiple occasions, addressing topics such as developing aspiring IT leaders and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the IT profession.

Prior to becoming a Spartan, Woo served as senior vice president for information technology and enterprise chief information officer for Stony Brook University. She has also held IT leadership roles at the University of Oregon, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign where she earned her Ph.D. in biophysics.
