Cybersecurity Awareness Training for MSU

On the heels of National Cybersecurity Awareness month in October, MSU is launching a highly requested, university-wide cybersecurity awareness training program. This multi-phased initiative is designed to equip our community with the knowledge and resources to identify cyberthreats and protect both individual and university data.

  • A first phase was launched in September to MSU IT and the Office of Research and Innovation staff.
  • Phase two will occur soon during 2024 and include faculty, researchers, academic staff and support staff.
  • Phase three will include students in January and February 2025.
  • Participation will fulfill the cybersecurity training requirement for this academic year.

Participants selected to take the training will receive an email from AbilityLMS with a link to the required training and instructions. Participants will have 30 days to complete the training, which is estimated to take 60 minutes. The recommended web browsers to take the training are Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

Importantly, this program aligns with the directives of National Security Presidential Memorandum 33 (NSPM-33) and its anticipated future requirements. The NSPM-33 is aimed at safeguarding the security and integrity of federally funded research and development.

In recent months, cybersecurity threats have made local and global headlines due to the significant disruptions in service and costly data loss and theft. As cyberthreats continue to grow in frequency and sophistication, it is crucial that the MSU community is prepared to defend against them. Protecting personal and institutional data begins with the individual but is a shared responsibility. Every Spartan plays a role.
