Beginning July 15, all instances of Java SE installed on MSU-managed devices will be replaced in phases with OpenJDK, a more cost-effective solution, to promote standardization across all units and to align with MSU’s operational excellence initiatives.
Replacing the Java SE software with a standard, secure, and open-source solution such as OpenJDK is the recommended approach, one that’s already been taken by fellow higher education peers.
To that end, units should evaluate their use of Oracle Java and stop using the software as soon as possible. Java SE will be replaced automatically with OpenJDK throughout July, or you may work with your IT support for a different solution.
All impacted devices include those managed by MSU. For these devices, software is accessed through MCM (for Microsoft) and JAMF (for Apple) and include:
- All devices (desktops, laptops, servers, etc.) running Windows Enterprise
- All non-Windows servers
- All Apple devices
If an application requires Oracle Java SE for desktop or servers, and cannot be replaced, a help request should be submitted to the appropriate team (Client Engineering team for workstations and Application Engineering team for servers).
