New semester, new start: 7 ways to get ready for classes

We want you to start your fall semester at Michigan State University out right! Know the MSU technology resources available by following these seven tips.

1. Secure your digital devices

Taking time to secure your digital devices (yes, even your smartwatch) is critical to ensuring your online safety.

The easiest step you can take is to password protect all of your devices and never leave your things unattended (including in the library).

Secureit.msu.edu provides an extensive list of resources to help you protect your devices from viruses, malware, phishing attempts, and more!

You should also have firewall and antivirus protection installed. You can purchase this software at a discount through the MSU on the Hub portal.

2. Know where to get technology help & support

Life happens and sometimes you have a late night technology problem or your laptop is on the fritz (or are on the receiving end of your late night coffee spill).

You can reach out to the IT Service Desk 24/7 to get help with your technology questions.

MSU Tech Store provides free consultations so you can get your machine up and running.

3. Get familiar with your inbox & office software

Make sure your email is setup and configured for your use.

Undergrad Students: Setting up your Spartan Mail account is only the first step to staying on top of your courses, learn how to optimize your inbox using the Clutter feature to make sure you never miss a message.

Grad Students: Graduate students have an MSU Email account. Please note that there is a plan to migrate you to Spartan Mail in the future.

Both undergraduate and graduate students can download Office Pro Plus software at no additional cost at Spartan365.msu.edu.

4. Learn about the software available in computer labs

Computer labs across campus, including within the Main Library, offer a variety of expensive and powerful software and applications. Just log into a computer with your MSU NetID and password to access.

Find a computer lab close to you and check out the list of available software.

5. Manage your coursework with D2L

MSU D2L is the learning management system used by many MSU instructors for distributing resources, taking quizzes, collecting papers, and much more.

Learn how to use D2L and consider downloading the D2L app so you can keep on track while you’re on the go!

6. Collaborate and store files in Spartan 365

MSU offers Spartan 365 to allow you to collaborate, store your files in the cloud, and optimize your workflow.
