Internet Explorer 11 nears end of life

computer displaying Internet Explorer iconIf you are a Windows 10 user, you have likely heard by now that Microsoft is ending support of Internet Explorer 11 for most Windows 10 operating systems on June 15, 2022.

What does that mean for users at Michigan State University? The answer depends on how you currently use Internet Explorer 11, if at all.

Most users will simply make the transition to utilizing Microsoft Edge, Microsoft’s modern web browser. Microsoft Edge is likely installed on your Windows PC already. According to Microsoft, “it’s easy to bring over your passwords, favorites and other browsing data from Internet Explorer in a few clicks. And if you run into a site that needs Internet Explorer to open, Microsoft Edge has Internet Explorer mode built-in so you can still access it.”

Edge addresses compatibility to legacy websites and applications. According to a Windows Blog posted in May of 2021, “Microsoft Edge has Internet Explorer mode (“IE mode”) built in, so you can access those legacy Internet Explorer-based websites and applications straight from Microsoft Edge.”

To enable IE Mode within Microsoft Edge, follow these instructions from Microsoft.

There is a handful of units (maybe more) that have web applications that only function through Internet Explorer. Those organizations must work to find an alternative solution prior to June 15, 2022. Contacting the MSU IT Service Desk by phone (517) 432-6200, chat, or self-service portal is the best way to get started.
