MSU IT is committed to delivering a secure and seamless digital experience for every Spartan—whether student, faculty, staff, alumni, or healthcare partner. Our Identity and Access Management (IAM) program is a cornerstone of that commitment, ensuring that the right people have the right access to the right resources at the right time.
Over the past year, we’ve made significant progress in modernizing IAM at MSU. These efforts are part of a multi-year roadmap that will ultimately enhance digital access for nearly 720,000 users.
Recent milestones include enabling modern features of MSU’s multifactor authentication, building the right team to advance IAM initiatives, and selecting a digital platform to unify the systems needed for identity and access management. Benefits include:
- Automatic access to EBS tools for all supervisors
- Fewer login prompts and passwords with same login across all MSU applications and systems (e.g., Microsoft 365, EBS, Student Information System, and D2L)
- Simplify and expand capabilities of guest enrollment, including bulk group enrollment for guests and collaborators
Okta FastPass
Chief among these milestones is the launch of Okta FastPass, a passwordless authentication option that simplifies login and strengthens security. Okta FastPass allows Spartans to sign in to MSU applications and systems using a PIN, quick glance or a touch (depending on individual hardware), leveraging familiar features like Windows Hello, Apple Face ID, or Touch ID. This innovative method replaces passwords with cutting-edge security technology, providing a seamless and secure login process.
With Okta FastPass, MSU is embracing a future where user experience and institutional security go hand in hand. Key benefits include:
- Simplified login process: No more juggling multiple passwords—log in with ease using face or fingerprint recognition
- Better protection from phishing attempts: Enhanced safeguards protect your data and the university’s resources
- Elevated security standards: This cutting-edge method aligns with MSU’s ongoing efforts to strengthen cybersecurity measures
Spartans can now enable Okta FastPass for personal and unmanaged MSU devices. Visit go.msu.edu/fastpass for step-by-step instructions on how to activate this feature. Managed devices will gain access with timelines determined by each college or unit’s IT support team.
Looking ahead
FastPass is just one of many steps in our roadmap for identity and access improvements; a strategy is designed to meet the evolving needs of our community. Future initiatives include:
- Self-service identity management of personal information across MSU applications and systems
- Simplified and faster access request approval process, including better onboarding process.
- Improved government and policy compliance and security enhancements
- Simplifying processes like orientation, registration, and enrollment for students
- Modernizing the capture of student feedback for enhanced learning experiences
- Supporting research collaborations and maintaining NIH security standards
- Enhancing resources for alumni and healthcare partners
As we continue to enhance digital identity and access, we are excited to collaborate with our campus partners. By embracing these advancements, we reinforce MSU’s mission to innovate and serve communities both on campus and beyond. Follow our progress as we strive to create a brighter and more secure digital future for every Spartan.
