Staying safe online

Incidents like these can lead to an increase in phishing and scam activities targeting students, faculty, and staff. This is a good time to review safe cybersecurity practices.

We encourage all members of the MSU community to keep the following best practices in mind:

  • Be alert for signs of phishing, including unexpected emails, texts, calls, suspicious links, or requests for sensitive information.
  • Use your MSU credentials only with approved MSU systems and services.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all personal accounts wherever possible.
  • Do not click links or download attachments from unknown or unverified sources.
  • Double-check requests that seem unusual, even if they appear to come from a trusted contact (reach out in a different way to confirm).
  • Never share your username and password with anyone.

If you receive a suspicious email or message, report it by forwarding it to abuse@msu.edu.

Maintaining good cyber hygiene helps protect your personal information and the broader MSU community. Visit secureit.msu.edu for more tips.

Thank you for your continued attention and commitment to keeping MSU secure.
