MSU IT welcomed Laura Clark as assistant chief information officer on Monday, January 12, 2026.

Laura comes to MSU from the State of Michigan, where she served as chief information officer (CIO). In that role, she oversaw operations for the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget (DTMB), which provides information technology, business, and administrative services to state employees and stakeholders, as well as Michigan residents, visitors, and businesses. Over her tenure with DTMB, Laura held key leadership positions including deputychief technology officer and chief security officer.

During her 25-year career in public service, Laura has embraced a hands-on, adaptable approach to leadership. Since being appointed as CIO by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, she has helped the State of Michigan achieve success through many initiatives, such as the launch of the award-winning Michigan Secure mobile app and successfully securing $20 million in critical cybersecurity funding from the Michigan Legislature for statewide security enhancements.

Laura’s leadership has been widely recognized: she received the 2023 Michigan ORBIE CIO of the Year Award (Nonprofit/Public Sector) and the 2022 StateScoop 50 Award for influential state government leaders. She is an active member of the Michigan Council for Women in Technology and serves on the executive committee of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers. Laura is also a proud Spartan, holding a Bachelor of Science in Geography.

“I am thrilled to join Michigan State University as the new assistant chief information officer,” Laura shared. “I look forward to collaborating with our partners and the IT organization to advance priorities aligned with MSU’s 2030 strategic plan and empower Spartan success.”
