The MSU IT Council met on June 1. Below are the high-level topic summaries from the meeting.
MSU IT’s Top 15 ProjectsBarb Dawson, Assistant Vice President of IT Strategy, reported on the “Top 15” technology projects as reported by the MSU IT Project Management Office. She explained that several criteria are used to classify a project as “Top 15” including if the project is high profile for MSU, if the project is funded, and if it is an innovation project and/or it supports the MSU Bolder IT vision to Strengthen, Align, and Innovate. IT Exchange Meeting
Updates to MSU’s Technology Purchasing Process: Members of University Services, IT Security, and MSU’s Web Accessibility team will present changes made to the IT procurement process to minimize security and data risks and maintain accessibility compliance for both new products and renewals.

MSU’s Institutional Data Policy (IDP) holds every member of the university community individually responsible for the appropriate use and protection of institutional data, and especially of confidential data, in their possession or control.
A first step to securing institutional data is increasing awareness about institutional data and confidential data.

MSU offers SecureIT tips for securing mobile devices
It’s important to safeguard your personal computers, mobile phones, tablets, and other devices.
- Use a passcode to lock your device when not in use.
- Set up automatic updates for operating systems, web browsers, and apps.
- If connecting to an unsecured Wi-Fi connection, be cautious about the sites visited and the information accessed.
MSU offers SecureIT phishing tips for faculty and staff
Michigan State University needs you to help keep our network and data safe.
Faculty and staff work with institutional data daily and need to take extra precautions, especially when dealing with potential phishing messages.
Know what things to look for in an email that may indicate it’s a phishing attempt.

SecureIT site provides information security guidelines to MSU community
The SecureIT site recently launched to provide the MSU community with one place for guidelines and best practices on information security.
MSU employees first used the site as part of the two-factor authentication rollout in March and April 2015.
The site also includes personal safe computing information, ways to safeguard your devices, phishing precautions, password tips, and illegal file sharing details. Read Full Article →

MSU to roll out two-factor authentication starting March 16
Over the next six weeks, Michigan State University is adding steps to safeguard personal and institutional data by applying two-factor authentication to human resources, payroll, and finance systems that are part of our Enterprise Business Systems (EBS).
