Software and security updates rarely appear at a convenient time. Most of us have seen an update notification and postponed it until later. The challenge is that attackers do not always wait.
Attackers are identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities faster using automation and AI. Once a serious weakness becomes known, delaying remediation can leave systems exposed while attackers look for ways to use it.
Security updates and patches often contain fixes for those vulnerabilities. Installing updates promptly reduces the amount of time a known weakness remains available to exploit. That need for speed also affects how the university manages risk. Planned maintenance windows remain preferred, but critical vulnerabilities may require shorter notice or occasional changes during business hours. MSU IT will continue to communicate maintenance, when possible, coordinate with service owners, and minimize disruption.
Whether working on campus, remotely or while traveling, use approved tools, be cautious on public or unfamiliar Wi-Fi and keep devices and applications current.
What this means at MSU
Vulnerabilities are being exploited faster, and timely updated and patching helps reduce exposure for yourself and the university. Responding quickly to critical risks protects important data systems, research, and operations.
Takeaways
- Install security updates when they become available.
- Keep operating systems and applications current and supported.
- Expect some critical issues to require faster or mid-day remediation.
Join Us at a Cyber Goose Pop-Up Event
Cybersecurity Awareness Month is happening on campus, too. Stop by our final Cyber Goose Pop-Up Event at the MSU Union on October 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to learn about cybersecurity resources and pick up a free Cyber Goose T-shirt while supplies last.
Whether you have questions about cybersecurity or just want to grab a shirt and say hello, we hope to see you there.
