Protecting Information Starts with Everyday Decisions

CyberGoose standing with his feathers on his hips, wearing a green MSU t-shirt with the helmet.Every day, faculty, staff, and students work with information that supports teaching, learning, research, and university operations. That includes student records, research data, financial information and sensitive business information. Because information is part of nearly everything we do, protecting it is a shared responsibility across the university.

Many information security incidents begin with everyday mistakes. A file is shared with more people than intended. Access is granted when it is not needed. Sensitive information is stored using the wrong tool or in the wrong location.

Before sharing information, ask a few simple questions. Does this person need access? Am I using an approved tool? Am I handling sensitive information appropriately? Taking a moment to consider those questions can help prevent common mistakes. Sound data practices protect privacy, maintain trust, and support the university mission.

What this means at MSU

MSU community members work with information that supports teaching, learning, research, and university operations. Small decisions about how that information is shared, stored and accessed can have a significant impact on privacy and security.

Takeaways

  • Share information only with people who need access.
  • Use approved university tools when handling sensitive information.
  • Consider privacy and security before sending, storing or sharing data.
