MSU Seminars in Research and Instructional Technology to be held December 17-18

IT Services will offer two days of no-cost workshops on research and instructional technology on December 17 and 18. These seminars are also open to graduate assistants (teaching and research).

The workshops are designed to support faculty, academic staff, and graduate assistants in their teaching and research roles by providing seminars led by experts in online learning, and instruction in the use of a variety of software tools. Read Full Article →

MSU launches D2L sandbox for instructors to try new version

IT Services launched a “sandbox” of the newest version of Desire2Learn (D2L) at next.d2l.msu.edu for immediate play and experimentation before the full upgrade in December.

This sandbox is only for trying out and previewing, not for live teaching. All content remaining in the sandbox will be lost in the next upgrade. Read Full Article →

MSU launches Eli Review pilot for use in writing development

Michigan State University obtained a license for faculty and instructors to use the Eli Review online peer review platform at no cost to them or students beginning with a fall 2013 semester pilot and running through the next two academic years.

Eli Review allows instructors to create peer-review opportunities that help students learn how to become better writers through a write, review, and revise process. Read Full Article →

IT Services rolls out updates in select technology classrooms for fall

IT Services updated technology in 14 classrooms for the fall 2013 semester. Instructors in those specific technology classrooms have received messages detailing the updates.

Select classroom updates are occurring in Anthony, Business College Complex, Center for International Program (CIP), Chemistry, Engineering, Eppley, Erickson, IM Circle, IM West, Jenison, and McDonel.

MSU is launching new Desire2Learn features for fall 2013

Starting in the fall 2013 semester, MSU is launching several new features in the MSU Desire2Learn (D2L) Learning Management System.

New features
  1. New gradebook feature: Upload grades from the D2L gradebook directly to the Registrar’s Office has been added. Faculty will still need to go into the Registrar’s system to submit final grades, but the process of moving the grades from the D2L gradebook to the Registrar’s Grade System can now be done by pressing a link.

To better support Michigan State University’s research faculty, IT Services formed a Collaborative Tools Team to analyze the needs for collaborative tools for researchers on campus. This team was sponsored by IT Services Content and Collaboration.

IT Services to upgrade to Windows 7, Office 2013 in computer labs

All university technology classrooms and computer labs using PCs will be updated to Windows 7 and Office 2013 over the summer for the fall 2013 semester.

This update will not substantially change the user experience in the labs, but older software will be affected. IT Services encourages instructors to test their software in advance. Read Full Article →

Five outstanding online and blended courses and technology enhancements in a course from Michigan State University were selected as recipients of this year’s AT&T Faculty-Staff Awards in Instructional Technology.

New version of Desire2Learn to launch May 9 along with new features

On May 9, MSU IT Services will upgrade Desire2Learn (D2L) from version 10.0 of to version 10.1, making new features available to instructors.

In addition to the new version, D2L will incorporate integrations with ePortfolio and a Learning Object Repository (LOR).
