MSU IT Council learns about technology projects, purchasing updates, and Student Success, Office 365 progress

The MSU IT Council met on June 1. Below are the high-level topic summaries from the meeting.

MSU IT’s Top 15 Projects

Barb Dawson, Assistant Vice President of IT Strategy, reported on the “Top 15” technology projects as reported by the MSU IT Project Management Office. She explained that several criteria are used to classify a project as “Top 15” including if the project is high profile for MSU, if the project is funded, and if it is an innovation project and/or it supports the MSU Bolder IT vision to Strengthen, Align, and Innovate. Updates to MSU’s Technology Purchasing Process: Members of University Services, IT Security, and MSU’s Web Accessibility team will present changes made to the IT procurement process to minimize security and data risks and maintain accessibility compliance for both new products and renewals.

New features added to MSU MediaSpace, including captioning and lecture capture

MSU Information Technology added captioning, lecture, capture, and other new features to Kaltura MediaSpace video storage on October 19 for MSU students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, MSU expanded MediaSpace bandwidth and storage to support continued growth.

Captioning

MediaSpace users can now order video captioning at no charge. This machine captioning service is 70-80% accurate, and there’s an editing tool for correcting any captions. Read Full Article →

MSU IT Services relaunched the MSU technology website, tech.msu.edu, on September 3 to enhance the user experience, streamline content and navigation, and advance the MSU and information technology brands.

Updates made to MSU Web Accessibility Policy and standards for digital content

Michigan State University is committed to accessibility on all levels. As we move toward a higher degree of dependence on the web to access programs, services, businesses, and activities, it becomes increasingly important to ensure that content is accessible to the broadest possible audience.

MSU departments, employees, faculty, and instructors are being asked to update web pages, online course materials, e-texts, PDFs, and any online content that is used for business and academic activities to meet the current MSU Web Accessibility Policy which includes Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, Conformance Level AA.
